Camp Courage Comes to the Central Coast!

Dear Friends,

I’ve cared about and worked for LGBT rights for a long time. So when I agreed to go to Camp Courage Sacramento, I didn’t know what I would learn that was new. After all, I know the arguments for and against Marriage Equality – I generally feel as if I can hold my own in a conversation. By the end of the weekend, I had learned a great deal about how to talk about and why I care about equality and justice for all.
At Camp Courage we teach each other and we build community through telling our personal stories of how we come to the struggle for LGBT equality. In Sacramento, I witnessed people who are otherwise terrified of public speaking feel so empowered that they got up and share their stories with everyone. Everywhere around me people made connections with each other through their individual story of self and collectively a story of “us” emerged. As for me, I learned how to tell the harder, more personal, stories and how doing so strengthens our community.
Please join us at Camp Courage Central Coast and share your story. You will be empowered to have those difficult conversations with folks who do not believe in equality and justice for all. I hope you will join us and help make our community stronger.

Camp Courage Central Coast is an opportunity for activists and organizers to come together, recommit our energies and our talents to the LGBT equality movement, and show the nation that we will not rest until all Californians are treated with the equality they deserve.
Inspired by the "Camp Obama" trainings that powered neighbor-to-neighbor organizing across America in 2008, Camp Courage is an intensive two-day training designed to teach empowerment, team building, leadership development, and grassroots organizing skills.

The Supreme Court decision on Prop 8 will be announced at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 26th. So much is at stake, Marriage Equality and the fate of the 18,000 marriages that have already been performed.

If they vote in support of Marriage Equality - We will gather to celebrate and continue our efforts to reach out to those who opposed us and continue our work to defeat DOMA.

If they vote against Marriage Equality - We will gather to mourn and continue our efforts to reach out to those who opposed us and continue our work to take Marriage Equality back to the voters in 2010.

Regardless, we will gather on the Day of the Decision. We still have much work to do.

Date: Tuesday - May 26th
Time: 5:30 pm
Location: Mitchell Park - SLO - Pismo and Osos Streets

Please take some time to look at the new www.equalitycentral.org website. It is an effort to have a single hub to showcase all the different organizations and events throughout the state.

Please feel free to share your ideas of what our D-Day should look like. All suggestions are welcomed.

Thanks,
David Kilburn

Past News.........................

We had an incredible turn out for the "March Forth on March 4th" Candle Light Vigil For Marriage Equality on the eve of the California Supreme Court hearing oral arguements regarding Prop 8. Thank you to all of you that were able to show up and show your support.

WELCOME TO THE SAN LUIS OBISPO CHAPTER OF MARRIAGE EQUALITY USA

We are saddened by the outcome of the recent election and the passage of Prop 8. Our opponents that were seeking to deny gay and lesbian citizens the fundamental right to marry many have had a temporary victory. We as Marriage Equaltiy believers will continue to work toward equality. While we are discouraged, we are not disempowered. We must rest and get back to work in educating our freinds, neighbors, co-workers about the importance of EQUALITY FOR ALL and Equal Protections under the law.

Thank you, to each and everyone of you that gave all of your time and spirit to gain MARRIAGE EQUALITY. We will prevail.
