WELCOME TO THE CA SACRAMENTO COUNTY CHAPTER
Chapter Leader Julie Tindall ca-sacramento@marriageequality.org
COURAGEOUS CONVERSATION
Please take the time this year to have that courageous conversation with someone new about your desire for equal marriage rights. Just one person for each member of your immediate family will get the word out to thousands. Numbers will get us there.
The Morning Wake-up Call for Equality -- An Ongoing Project that EVERYONE can participate in!
We will never have our full marriage rights unless the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) is repealed at the federal level, which Obama promised to do. However, there is no movement on the DOMA so far.
But, what if the White House received 100,000 messages a day from all over the country, email and phone calls, demanding equality? It only takes a few minutes, it's free, and you can do it at home in your pajamas! Every morning call or email President Obama, and tell him to repeal DOMA (the Defense of Marriage Act). We say the morning so it becomes a regular part of your routine. Of course, you can do it at the time that works best for you. The key is to do it daily.
President Obama: (202) 456-1111, but sometimes you have to call over and over to get through, so although phone calls are stronger, email works too: comments@whitehouse.gov
And if it suits you, you can write Michelle Obama: firstlady@whitehouse.gov
Send this notice to everyone you know, recruit participants every chance you get. Print this out and give it to people, post it, put it on your social networking page, hand it out at church, work, meetings, etc. I know we have millions and millions of supporters - surely 100,000 is a small percentage of that - but what an impact it will have!!! The idea is to keep it up until we get justice, until we have full equality.

I have worked for a 501c(3) and 501c(4) for six years and am excited to have the opportunity be involved with MEUSA! Proposition 8 is what spurred me to become an activist for the first time. I am passionate about the marriage equality issue for several reasons:
1. I thought Prop 8 did not have a chance. In fact, when I first heard it was going on the ballot, I thought, “Good luck with that”. I thought California was too progressive to let something like this happen. When I noticed the small percentage of undecided voters in the polls, I began protesting in the streets prior to the election. I was extremely disheartened when the proposition passed.
2. I am offended by the fact that religious doctrine in disguise was written into our State Constitution with the express purpose of suppressing the rights of a group of people. We are not a Theocracy. Our Constitution is meant to protect us, not hurt us, nor should it be manipulated to create an “us” and “them” line of thinking.
3. I find it appalling that marriage rights were given to the LGBTIQ community and then ripped away just months later. The straight community has the luxury of being born with these rights – why should ANYONE have to fight for the same?
4. I want to help reconcile the misleading information set forth by the Yes On 8 campaign. The more I talk to people and debunk what they were told and hold to be true, the more I see people who wish they had voted differently. I really think we can turn this vote around with more education!
