Why do YOU support marriage equality?
What does this issue mean to you?
We need to continue to amplify the themes underscored by Olson/Boies, the attornyes opposing Propostion 8 in California, which focused on the inclusion and integration of LGBTTIQ people within the legal protections enjoyed by mainstream Americans. Olsen/Bois framed the current Prop 8 controversy within the larger historical context of past discriminatory laws that have since been eliminated. By using the Olsen/Bois framework we can show that marriage discrimination against the LGBTTIQ community is but one more instance of unfounded bias and prejudice; that eliminating this bias is consistent with the enduring American principle of extending Constitutional protections and fairness to all people.
Let our response to the Prop 8 ruling be to reach out in fellowship and compassion to those here in Colorado who would have voted for Proposition 8 in 2008 - those who would have voted "Yes" out of fear, or due to confusion and lack of information.
We've watched how the positions of past CA Governor Schwarzenegger, U.S. Senator Diane Feinstein and San Diego Mayor and Prop 8 trial witness Jerry Sanders, all evolved regarding marriage equality. We've watched as pro athletes, conservative legislators, and even people who used to work in strident oppostion to marriage equality have changed their minds - whose hearts have changed. Let's try to do this work with a grace that allows people to evolve in their positions towards marriage equality with dignity - many of them will actually join us as we move forward. Remember, our ultimate goal is of a more inclusive, kind and loving country, with equal access under the law for everyone.
